"Ostpolitik" was the product of my four month study in Germany. Featuring large-scale drawings and photographs, the exhibition showcased architectural studies, political slogans and historic environments as a way of illustrating Germany’s recent history and present political tensions. "Ostpolitik" served as a critical look at how notions of nationalism, collectivism, and militarism are manifesting themselves in modern socio-political culture, and attempted to provoke questions about the connection between past and present. The exhibition was shown at the Anna Leonowens Gallery from November 7-12, 2016.
Drawings
Photographs
The photographs of the exhibition focused on the modern state of places with historical significance. Communist-era apartment blocks, abandoned refugee centers and train stations, prisons, and monuments associated with the Third Reich are the main features.
Sketches/studies
Examples of observational sketches I did while in Germany. These sketches formed the basis of the large drawings that I showed in the exhibition.
